Hand portable two way radios are otherwise known as walkie talkies. The range of these radios depends on the system to which they are connected. If required, they can have a short range of only a few hundred yards or, if preferred, a wider range that can stretch from a couple of miles to covering the entire country.
The simplest form of walkie talkie communication is the PMR446 licence free service which is ideal for short range use.
For longer range and increased durability, walkie talkies need to be connected to a simple PMR/PBR radio system or a radio network with a subscription. |

What Is PMR446?
Once the exclusive use of the Police and security services, business radio is suddenly everywhere - from restaurants to garden centres helping business function efficiently all over the country.
The reason for all this activity is a Government initiative to relax control of some of the airwaves and allow a simplified licence free service known as PMR446.
Radios for use on this service are less expensive than conventional licenced equipment. The very cheapest are suitable for leisure use whilst the more expensive are ideal for professional business applications.
The uses are endless, wherever people need to talk to each other within a radius of about one mile. Walkie talkies can offer great benefits - they are simple, cheap and reliable - and unlike cellphones, once brought there are no further charges. |

PMR/PBR
PMR or Private Mobile Radio is the original two-way radio dating from 1947 when the first system was licensed by the then G.P.O. At first it was used principally by the police, fire brigade and other official bodies. These day's it's use has extended throughout industry and it is used wherever immediate communication is required. It can be tailored to either cover small areas, such as building sites or department stores where handportables are often used, or large 30 mile radius systems for use by taxis, refuse trucks etc, using vehicle mounted equipment or motorcycle couriers and traffic wardens using handportables. |
